Pain Changes People (Prose)

Authored February 21, 2025

We are never the same after a traumatic event. It changes us. Trauma has that affect depending on how powerful it is. The magnitude of the impact shatters what you once believed in, and it changes your core. Trauma often brings forth pain. Pain itself is a manifest of trauma.

I want to say it gets better but for some people it never does. And some of these people opt out. The pain is too great. But for those who push on, a never-ending battle ensures. Pain changes people. A change in approach, behaviours, psychology and personality. The extroverted become introverted. The mind becomes infested by the incident, as if on a never-ending replay.

I do not want to patronise people by saying it can get better. For some things do improve. Everyone is on their own journeys here. There is no salient way out of pain. For those who can hang on, there is a reprieve. There is a certain amount of self-reflective audience with oneself.

Trauma is a human experience that can happen in a multitude of ways. Pain is a fragment and a direct dissonance of the incident or event. It is not evil; it is simply a human experience. Pain changes you. Always.
