The Undated Poems Collection
It was almost surreal,
That day that would change forever, the Earth,
I remember hearing the steady roar of a jet in the skies,
First one and then a dozen more behind the first,
From my house the TV News Channel was abuzz,
The reporters choking back pinions of emotion,
To give the worsening news of a situation fast out of control.
Entering the living room, I turned my eyes on the TV,
Pictures and reports from across the globe,
Of grown men playing with their toys,
Yet these toys were so deadly like the talons of a rattlesnake.
Death was claiming its victims,
And the Grim Reaper was seen taking the souls of the damned.
Death had every dominion, its tangled web spawning,
A World totally out of control, no restraint,
Diplomacy had suffered, each nation could not afford,
To step down and the verbal game turned into a game of action.
Nation turned on nation, man turned against fellow man,
On this day, it was seen, and it was known,
Heaven cried tears of acid that rained down,
As the first nuclear bombs left their silos,
Cities fell in a blaze of brilliant death,
Hundreds of years of evolution had created a species,
That could crack the codes of the universe,
And what did we do with this knowledge,
We blew ourselves up.
On that day, I remembered,
Feeling truly alone as the radio and TV broadcasts,
Were cut off as cities disappeared,
Phone Lines were engaged, as people called
Cities that no longer held people but corpses.
As the world was covered in clouds of radiation,
And acid rain, the tears of heaven
Slowly tore down man's creation over time.
After time, after humanity....
Humanity did not go out with a whimper,
But a bang.
