“Regret Is a Creek”

Authored: April 1, 2017

There is a litany of regrets that cloud my memories
Missed chances, lost opportunities
Looking back some of those missed chances
Could have led to happiness for me.

Regret is a Creek, one that I have visited often lately
It seems I walk along its banks
My regrets lead me to see the outcomes
But I don't see it as a negative
I am learning never to take anything for granted
Ever again.

So, I slide into the creek
Under a clear warm sun
Alone but you are in my thoughts
Imagining you with me
Bringing my hands to your cheeks
Softly my lips upon yours kissing you
As we feel the flow of the current.

There is a reason now that I am alone
And all my missed chances are replayed
I duck my head under water and open my eyes
Visions under a new world cloud my mind
The tide flows out
Memories and visions flow in.

I watch as the tide flows out
The regret within
The regret is fading
A litany of what ifs.

There is one person I regret hurting
That is the greatest regret left
So, I wade out into the middle of the creek alone
I reach the sandy bottom of the outgoing tide
Feeling the fish move around me.

There is a moment of clarity
This creek is regret
And I am in the middle of it
The epitome of regret
My feet sink and are stuck.

In time someone will find me
Frozen in place
Head above water
They will name this creek, Regret
Under a passive face
Belies a passionate replaying of what could have been.
