Close your eyes young child, do not be afraid
If you close your eyes tightly and firmly, the hurts and the pains
Of this world won't get to you
And in that room, a lone flame blinks out of existence
In the darkness, the child hears it
It is a drumming, it is a cacophony
It is a heartbeat, and it is a chorus.
The man sits on the edge of the cliff on headlands
And feels salty wind brush across his face
Ahead of him he sees rolling and rushing clouds
Play at the tips of a coming Tsunami
And he hears it too, it is Power, it is Earth's song being sung
A chorus and a heartbeat.
The old woman sits on the balcony in the front of her mansion
And she hears the panicked tone of the radio announcer
Ahead of her she sees a flock of bird's scamper into the teary sky
Before being eviscerated in Light
In her callused eyes she sees a mushroom cloud
Before it engulfs her.
In that underground bunker your leaders seek shelter
Those who acknowledged and gave the orders for the bombs to be dropped
Denizens and brutes who want to live on
But that order and age was at an end
Above them the Earth was roiling in pain.
Above Earth in Orbit the crew of the space station looked on
And no words were said but they clung to each other
And they knew what they were seeing was the darkness encroach on Humanity
We yearned to know the secrets of the universe
Yet we could not live together in peace.
Open your eyes young child, and go outside
Open them wide and open the door and step outside
And the child does, and the child steps into a garden, into unsoiled nature
And behind the child and in front of the child
Is the promise.
The flame burns all around, and it is the promise of Love
The sound the child hears is the communal heartbeat
It is the drumming, and it is the epiphany
It is our common heartbeat. It is our chorus
Our future is left unwritten
We can live in a world of peace
Or we can perish and when some eon later evolution brings forth a new species.
And when they explore this world and see the ruins of us
They will read our past
And know we were a species with so much potential
And yet could not get it together.
